DEAN AMADO VALDEZ

Dean Amado Valdez’s real passion is legal aid work. No wonder he’s at his best form whenever on board in his public service radio show, Magpayo Nga Kayo with May Valle-Ceniza.

He is currently the dean of the University of the East (UE) College of Law, which he re-assumed in 2005. He is one of the 60 recipients of UE’s Diamond Jubilee Award for Most Outstanding Alumni. He is currently the vice president for Metro Manila of the Philippine Association of Law Schools, and an independent director of the largest mining firm listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Dean Valdez graduated from the UE College of Law. He pursued his master’s degree in Business Economics at the University of Asia and the Pacific. He then took up special studies in International Business Law at the National University of Singapore and the Asian Institute of Management. He was also conferred by the Laguna State Polytechnic University with a degree of Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa.

As director of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) in 1999, he implemented nationwide legal aid programs such as decongestion of jails, training of paralegals, conference for the protection of women and children, and improvement of barangay justice system. Likewise, it was during his incumbency that the IBP commenced the Drug Watch. In 2000, he was involved as one of the original private prosecutors in the impeachment trial of then President Joseph Estrada. In 2001, he was the government corporate counsel with the rank of presiding justice of the Court of Appeals. In 2004, he became undersecretary at the Office of the President, and also served as executive director of the Presidential Commission on the Visiting Forces Agreement.

With writing as one of his interests, Dean Valdez’ column in People’s Tonight was chosen as one of the finalists for “Best Opinion Column” in the 2004 Catholic Mass Media Awards. He was also a member of the editorial board of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines Law Journal.

Dean Valdez co-anchors DZMM's Magpayo Nga Kayo with May Ceniza.
