GUS ABELGAS
As one of the pioneer reporters of ABS-CBN, Augusto “Gus” Abelgas believes that good journalists only use 20 percent of what they have learned in school; the rest--they acquire from experience.
In 1980, while already working as a writer for the Public Information Service Office of the Department of National Defense, he graduated from the Lyceum of the Philippines with a degree in AB Journalism. He then became a correspondent for the People’s Journal in 1986. In 1988, he was hired as police beat reporter of ABS-CBN. Since then, he has contributed stories for different news and current affairs program.
Gus’ name has always been incorporated with investigative and crime-related programs. There were at least five notorious killers who have surrendered through him since 1995, not to mention a number of cases solved through his personal accounts on the suspects.
In 2001, he started anchoring the program True Crime. It was because of this program that Gus was awarded the VACC (Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption) Award for “Best Anchor of the Year.” In 2002, he hosted the self-titled Gus Abelgas, Nag-uulat, which lasted for two years. In 2004, Gus was then chosen to anchor the investigative show, Private I. He currently hosts ABS-CBN’s S.O.C.O. (Scene of the Crime Operatives) and SOCO sa DZMM with co-anchor David Oro.
Gus believes that one should not take anything for granted, for even wrappers of salted fish may contain imprints that are valuable. As one of the pioneer reporters of ABS-CBN, he believes that good journalists only use 20 percent of what they have learned in school; the rest—they acquire through experience.
