LOUIE TABING

Ka Louie, as he is fondly called, was born to a farming family in Batangas and worked his way through school to complete his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree at the U.P. Los Baños in 1970. He then took up graduate studies in Mass Communication at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.

His broadcasting ability was honed at the UPLB’s campus station DZLB, where he served as a student announcer for two years. In 1969, he became a producer for an agricultural program of Radyo Veritas. He rose from ranks to become the station’s chief announcer, and eventually, the Program Director.

In 1982, Ka Louie became the national chairman of the Philippine Federation of the Rural Broadcasters. In 1991, he was appointed by UNESCO (Paris) to serve as project manager of the Tambuli community radio project, which aims to present an alternative broadcasting system in remote communities. The project, which consists of 24 community radios (80 percent of which still exist today), have become models not only in Asia but in many developing countries as well.

Knowing the depths and breadths of agriculture (i.e., farming, vermin-culture, meat processing and animal husbandry), Ka Louie was invited to join DZMM in 1998. He started anchoring Sa Kabukiran, DZMM’s top-rating developmental program.

Ka Louie has also written books on community radio, and has compiled and published the poems he wrote for the “Punlang Diwa” segment of Sa Kabukiran.
